How To Compare Betting Bonus Terms
Two offers with the same headline number can be worth completely different amounts — the terms decide which

The Headline Number Is The Least Important Part
A "€50 welcome bonus" tells you almost nothing. What that €50 is actually worth depends on the rollover attached to it, the minimum odds you must bet at, which payment methods qualify, how long you have to use it, and what happens to the stake when a free bet wins. This guide walks through each clause with real examples, so you can compare the offers on our rankings on substance rather than font size.
Rollover / Wagering Requirements — A Worked Euro Example
Rollover (also called wagering or turnover requirements) is the total amount you must stake before bonus money becomes withdrawable cash. It is the single biggest driver of an offer's real value.
Worked example: A site offers a 100% deposit match up to €100 with a 5x rollover on the bonus. You deposit €100 and receive a €100 bonus. Before you can withdraw the bonus or anything won with it, you must place 5 × €100 = €500 in qualifying bets. If the average bet loses around 5% of its stake to the bookmaker's margin, working through €500 of turnover "costs" roughly €25 in expected losses — so the realistic value of that €100 bonus is closer to €75, before you factor in odds restrictions.
Now compare a 10x rollover on deposit plus bonus: that is 10 × €200 = €2,000 of required turnover for the same €100 headline. At the same 5% margin, expected losses of about €100 wipe out the bonus entirely. Same headline, radically different offer. Always check two things: the multiplier, and whether it applies to the bonus alone or deposit + bonus.
Simple "Bet €10 Get €30 in free bets" offers usually have no rollover on the free bets themselves — winnings are withdrawable immediately — which is why modest-looking bet-and-get offers are often better value than big percentage matches.
Minimum Odds Clauses
Almost every offer requires qualifying bets at or above minimum odds — commonly 1.50 (1/2), sometimes 1.80 or 2.00. This stops punters clearing rollover on near-certainties at 1.05. The higher the minimum odds, the more variance you take on while clearing the bonus. Watch for a subtle variant on accumulators: some offers require each leg to meet minimum odds, not just the combined price. A 2.00 minimum per leg is a much tougher condition than 2.00 overall.
Payment-Method Exclusions
Many offers exclude deposits made with certain payment methods — historically Skrill and Neteller are the most common exclusions, and some offers also exclude PayPal or prepaid cards. Deposit with an excluded method and you simply do not get the bonus, with no warning at the point of deposit at some sites.
Good news for Irish punters: Revolut is treated as a standard Visa/Mastercard debit card and qualifies for nearly all offers, as do Apple Pay deposits at most operators (Apple Pay is card-backed). But "nearly all" is not "all" — the payment clause is one line in the terms and takes ten seconds to check. If withdrawal speed matters to you too, pair this with our fast withdrawal betting sites guide before choosing a deposit method.
Expiry Windows
Every stage of an offer has a clock on it. Typical patterns: the qualifying bet must be placed within 7–30 days of registration; free bets land after the qualifier settles and then expire in 7 days (sometimes as little as 48 hours); bonus funds under rollover typically expire in 30–90 days. Short free-bet expiry is the most common way value quietly evaporates — if you claim an offer on a Monday and don't bet again until the following weekend, a 7-day token may already be gone. Claim offers when you actually intend to use them.
Free Bets: Stake Not Returned
Nearly all free bets are SNR — stake not returned. Place a €30 free bet at odds of 3.00 and win: a cash bet would return €90 (€60 profit + €30 stake), but the free bet returns only the €60 winnings. The token itself vanishes.
This has a practical consequence: an SNR free bet is worth more at bigger prices. At odds of 1.50 a €30 SNR token wins you just €15; at 4.00 it wins €90. Using SNR free bets on short-priced favourites throws most of their value away — modest outsiders or bet-builder prices around 3.00–5.00 extract far more from the token. Also check whether free bets can be split into smaller stakes; single-use-only tokens force an all-or-nothing bet.
The 60-Second Bonus Checklist
- Rollover: What multiplier, and on bonus only or deposit + bonus? Free-bet winnings withdrawable immediately?
- Minimum odds: What price, and per-leg or overall on accumulators?
- Payment methods: Does your deposit method (Skrill/Neteller especially) qualify?
- Clocks: Qualifying window, free-bet expiry, bonus expiry.
- Free bet mechanics: SNR or stake returned? Can tokens be split?
- Market restrictions: Some offers exclude certain sports, in-play bets or cashed-out bets from qualifying.
- Max winnings caps: A minority of offers cap what a free bet can win — worth knowing before you back an outsider.
Run any offer through that list and you will know its real value in under a minute. We do exactly this for every offer shown on this site and summarise the key terms in each operator comparison and review — and if you mostly bet from your phone, our betting apps guide covers which apps surface terms clearly instead of hiding them.
The Bottom Line
Bonus terms are not traps as long as you read them — they are the price list. A smaller offer with light terms routinely beats a bigger one with heavy rollover. All offers referenced on this page are for new customers aged 18+, terms and conditions always apply, and no bonus is ever a reason to stake more than you planned. Please gamble responsibly.
